[Update] KDE 4.1 erscheint im Juli 2008 laut KDE Release Team!

KDE 4.1 wird wahrscheinlich im Juli 2008 erscheinen, laut KDE Release Team. 6 Monate später im Januar 2009 wird KDE 4.2 veröffentlicht.

Laut KDE Release Team soll KDE 4.1 folgende Features enthalten

* Mac Port
* Windows Port
* OpenSolaris Port
* Plasma with widgets on canvas, makes things like layouting much easier, and generally integrating widgets into plasmoids
* Webkit in plasma
* Apple dashboard widgets support in Plasma
* Decibel VOIP and real-time communication framework
* Dragon Player multimedia player
* More polished kopete
* KDevelop and KDevplatform
* KDE-PIM, based on Akonadi
* GetHotNewStuff2 / DXS
* Plasmagik plasma packages and add-on creator
* Lots of smaller features

KDE 4.1 wird auf QT 4.4 aufsetzen und als neues Backend Phonon ( gstreamer, DirectShow, QuickTime) einsetzen. Zur selben Zeit soll KOffice 2 und Amarok2 erscheinen.

[Update] Heise Online berichtet, das KDE zukünftig alle 6 Monate erscheinen soll. Soweit sind die Angaben von vizzzion.org bestätigt worden

Wenn alles gut geht erscheint KDE 4.0 am 11.Januar. Auf der Webseite von www.pro-linux.de wird beschrieben wie KDE 4.0 aus dem Quelltext installiert werden kann. So hat jeder die Möglichkeit KDE 4.0 eigenständig von seiner Linux-Distribution zu installieren. Die Anleitung geht Schritt für Schritt durch die Installation.

Eine Woche später am 18.01 findet die offizielle KDE 4.0 Releaseparty im Googlehauptquartier in Mountain View Kalifornien statt.

[Update]: Um das neue KDE4 zu testen, gibt es auf der ubuntu.com eine LiveCD zum testen.

KDE 4 ist in Kubuntu 8.04 -Hardy Heron- enthalten

Laut Jonathan Riddell wird das kommmende Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 3.5.X als auch die neue Version von KDE 4 enthalten. Offiziell soll Kubuntu 8.04 aka Hardy Heron im April 2008 erscheinen. Leider wird Kubuntu 8.04 kein Long Term Support bekommen.

“The release schedule for KDE 4 is now clear, and it will be released
during the development cycle of Kubuntu 8.04. This new major release
is already attracting significant interest from users, and is the
focus of most KDE developer effort at this point. The majority of
enquiries are now about KDE 4, and an unsupported Live CD of the 7.10
platform with KDE 4 RC2 we released earlier this month was downloaded
by a significant number of developers.

We regularly review each release during the development cycle, keeping
an eye on the work that our upstreams are doing. From time to time,
this work reaches a natural rest point resulting in a particularly
stable release. For these releases, Canonical makes a commercial
commitment to provide support for a longer term and these become known
as “LTS” releases.

Since KDE 4 is a major change to the platform, it is not currently at
one of these natural rest points so would not be suitable for long
term support. Instead, due to the very high interest, development
efforts will be directed towards KDE 4 and releasing Kubuntu 8.04 with
the option of using either KDE 3.5 or KDE 4.

Users currently running Kubuntu 6.06 will be able to upgrade through
the usual path to Kubuntu 8.04, keeping to the KDE 3.5 release series,
and will receive the usual 18 months of support for that
release. Future Kubuntu releases are likely to be based on the KDE 4
series.”
